ADHD isn’t a deficit. It’s a difference.

A compassionate, beautifully illustrated guide to understanding the ADHD mind.

A Delightful Human Difference is a new illustrated Book by bestselling author Matthew Johnstone and psychologist Janelle Booker. Warm, evidence-informed, and genuinely reassuring, this book explores why the ADHD brain works the way it does, and why that's not something to fix.

Ninety original illustrations. A whole new way of seeing.

This book is for you if…

  • You're ready to see yourself as more than your struggles

  • You're the parent of an ADHDer — whatever their age

  • You're the partner or friend of an ADHDer who wants to understand them better

  • You're a professional who works with and cares about ADHDers

The book has landed!

Kipi Comelately’s story is fictional. But so much of what happens to her isn’t. Our hope is that ADHDers finish this book feeling more understood, more hopeful, and more at home in themselves.

And for those of you who love or work with an ADHDer, we know you will finish the book with a deeper understanding and appreciation for what they bring to the world, not just their daily challenges.

The people behind the book

Matthew Johnstone is a bestselling author and illustrator whose books have helped millions of people understand mental health. A Delightful Human Difference is his most personal project yet.

Janelle Booker is a psychologist specialising in ADHD across the lifespan. She brings warmth, expertise, and lived experience to everything she does.

Our whole desire with this book is to reframe what ADHD means. To replace a label that has never done justice to the people who carry it with something far more accurate: recognition, understanding, empathy and healing.

The hero of our book is Kipi Comelately, a creative, kind and curious woman who is struggling to manage her life, her household and her self-worth. Until a friend suggests she might have ADHD and Kipi begins to better understand her life experience of never quite fitting into the world around her, and begins to develop a new way of relating to her brain, her behaviour and her sense of herself.

This book doesn’t seek to frame ADHD as a superpower. Instead, the intention is to contribute to the growing conceptualisation of ADHD as being a different kind of brain; one that is hard-wired with strengths as well as challenges that can be quite different to neurotpyical brains.

The word ‘delightful’ has been chosen deliberately - as a purposeful contrast to the traditional view of ADHD as solely being a disorder (with full awareness that many ADHDers experience some aspects of their brain as anything but delightful). In time, we, along with many others, hope that ADHD will be officially renamed to more accurately reflect the complexity and richness of ADHD brains and people.

A Delightful Human Difference is a large and deeply personal piece of work. We’re currently at around 90 illustrations and counting, because ADHD is a vast, fascinating, and widely misunderstood topic.

REVIEWS:

"This is more than a book; it’s an invitation I can share with others so they might see, appreciate, and connect with a delightful human difference I have kept hidden for too long. It’s a masterpiece of visual empathy that has the power to inspire love via the bridge of understanding.”
